Module 02: Anatomy and Psychology of Creativity

Anatomy is the hardware of the brain. Psychology is the software. This module takes creativity out of the realm of genius and treats it as a skill with physical machinery behind it, then gives you the habits and practices that develop it.

The single claim the whole module rests on: creativity is a skill, and like any other skill you can learn it, hone it, perfect it, teach it, and forget it.


2.1 What is creativity

Creativity is a skill, not a gift

The swimming analogy. Ask people why they can swim and they will say: access to a pool, a coach, practice, someone in the family who swam. Nobody says they were divinely gifted, and nobody claims non-swimmers are cursed by nature. Everyone is born able to learn to swim; only some choose to. Creativity works identically.

It is the act that is creative, not the person

The cat-and-milk drawing. A teacher gives a child a picture of a cat and a bowl of milk. The child draws a straight line joining them, ignoring the implied maze. The teacher gives a star, because the question never said the route had to go through the labyrinth. That was creative.

Now the same teacher gives the same child the same question again and the child draws the same straight line. Is that still creative? No. The child did not become less creative in five minutes. The act stopped being creative.

Memory hook: Creativity is a property of acts, not of people. Being human qualifies you to be creative. Repeating yourself does not.

The human creative timeline

Homo sapiens has been around roughly 200,000 years, and the sequence shows creativity is old and agriculture is recent.

The two conditions: novelty and utility

Creativity needs imagination, but creativity is beyond imagination. If imagination alone were enough, any daydream would count.

2.2 Components of creativity

Creativity is not jugaad

Soni's own example: if the chair he is sitting on wobbles, he folds a piece of paper and tucks it under the leg. That is jugaad, not creativity.

Intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation is cash, a pat on the back, an appraisal, a rally cry, or for a student, placements, marks and social recognition. It is not useless (scientists and artists are paid), but payment is not a driver of creativity, and extrinsic motivation takes you only so far.

Memory hook: Asked which of the three they lack, most people claim adequate expertise and adequate motivation. The lynchpin nearly everyone is missing is creative thinking skills, precisely because most people never think of creativity as a skill at all.


2.3 Creativity mapped to the brain

Most synaptic firings are momentary. They form a lasting pattern only through repetition, which is why the standard neurological saying is: the neurons that fire together are the neurons that wire together.

The implication. As you age you form fewer new connections and instead reinforce the ones you already have. Learning is hampered. Children ask questions partly because they know little, but adults do not know everything either and still stop asking. If neurons go unused over a long period, they give way, which is the picture in Alzheimer's and dementia.

The hand analogy: at birth you could have written with either hand. You picked one. Both hands remain physically identical, but the untrained one has lost its fine motor skill. The same asymmetry can develop between the two halves of the brain.

The three-cohort experiment

Common trap: Most people guess cohort B. Puzzles feel like brain training but they exercise the half you already over-use. The winner is the art cohort.

Creativity is neither a left-brain nor a right-brain phenomenon. It lives in the prefrontal cortex, which is where the two come together. This is why so many famous mathematicians were also philosophers, and why the practical prescription is for scientists to take up artistic hobbies and artists to pursue science.


2.4 Creativity as fluid intelligence

Soni runs a sequence of images and asks what comes next. The first two are easy, the third takes time, the fourth defeats you, because the pattern degrades.

The folded-hands demonstration. Fold your arms and note which hand ends on top. Now refold them in one smooth motion so the other hand is on top. It is awkward, and it has no evolutionary logic or functional utility. Your body simply has a pattern.

Constellations are the same instinct at scale: stars are neither in a line nor near each other, and we impose shapes on them anyway. Minds seek patterns even in randomness, which is exactly why breaking one is hard and why creativity is difficult.

The latent inhibition study

Latent inhibition (LI) is your reaction to an unknown stimulus. High LI means you hold yourself back and do not respond to the familiar in an unfamiliar way. Low LI means you do not hold yourself back.

Read the table carefully. High IQ with high latent inhibition scores 8.1, barely above moderate IQ. High IQ combined with low latent inhibition scores 28.6, roughly three times any other cell.

Memory hook: Attitude beats intelligence. Intelligence alone buys you almost nothing. It is intelligence plus the willingness to react, risk and make mistakes that produces creative achievement.

The attitude being described is taking things a little easy. If you take yourself and the world too seriously you cannot be creative, because creativity necessarily involves making mistakes, and a person unwilling to risk also silently forbids everyone around them from risking.

The three signs you are in flow

  1. You lose your sense of time. You do not know how much has passed.
  2. The means and the end are the same thing. As in dancing, you are not trying to arrive anywhere on the floor.
  3. You do not get tired, even when working very hard.

How to run it: audit your day for moments where all three conditions hold. They usually cluster around hobbies: singing, dancing, cooking, gardening, playing an instrument, teaching, looking after children. Then deliberately create such opportunities daily. Nobody is in flow all day. Soni counts himself lucky to get 60 to 90 minutes, and treats that window as the day's creative capacity.


2.5 Thinking fast and slow

Warm-up: 7 plus 7 is instant. 7 times 7 is instant. 49 times 49 forces you to slow down. Different questions recruit different machinery. Daniel Kahneman named the two systems.

Why the brain loves System 1: because the brain loves patterns, and System 1 is entirely made of patterns.

The direction of traffic. A newborn has almost no System 1 at all, only sucking. Walking, talking, drawing and writing all begin as laborious System 2 work and are then dumped into System 1. Learning to drive is the classic case: at first no music, no conversation, no head movement. Once it is muscle memory you can listen to music and talk on the phone. Everything you learn moves from System 2 to System 1 to free up capacity for higher-order functions.

Which system does creativity need? Most people answer fast. The correct answer is slow. When you think fast you are not thinking at all, you are reflexing.

Common trap: Extra time does not fix these. The problem is not that you are wrong but that you are confident you are right. That is System 1. When this test is run at Harvard, Stanford and Yale, most people do not score three out of three.

How to actually think slow

Talk slow. Write slow. Walk slow. Breathe slow. Go deep instead of shallow. Do not rush the day.

And focus: Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, asked separately for the one word behind their success, both wrote focus. Do not try to solve many problems. Solve a few problems well.


2.6 Habits of creative individuals

Habits do not bind creativity, they liberate it. Habits are hard to start and then become smooth and pay exponential returns. There are seven.

Habit 1: Multiple affiliations and the T-shaped personality

Leonardo da Vinci is the reference: painter, anatomist, sculptor, mathematician, physicist, tinkerer and student of spirituality. In his era nobody had a single, well-defined career. Our professional affiliations have since become our identities, and we would rather cut our interests than challenge those identities.

The interview question that tests this. Everybody is asked "who are you?" and answers with their last good role. Almost nobody is asked "who all are you?" People run out of answers after a sentence or two, which reveals how deliberately they have narrowed their lives.

Memory hook: You need a point of view like a backbone, to stand straight. You do not need a rigid backbone, or you cannot function.

Habit 2: Take your hobbies seriously (and music as a hobby)

Einstein started the violin at eight and said that if he were not a physicist he would have been a violinist. Stuck on a physics or mathematics problem, he would go and play, and material would surface from the subconscious into the conscious mind for him to write down. Kekule dreamt of a snake biting its own tail and woke with the ring structure of benzene.

What is a hobby? Something you do without external motivation and try to improve at. Play for an audience or for money and it becomes a profession, at which point you load it with pressure and may kill it.

The three things a hobby gives you:

Why a musical hobby specifically. Listening to music is passive. Playing an instrument is active, and almost every instrument (guitar, violin, flute, piano, harmonium, drums, mouth organ) uses both hands simultaneously, which raises neural connectivity between the left and right brain through the corpus callosum.

The Einstein autopsy. When Einstein died in 1955 at a hospital in New Jersey, Dr Thomas Harvey took his brain at autopsy without the family's knowledge. It was cut up and distributed to neuroscientists across the US and Canada, and only recently reassembled. Findings: the brain was smaller than a typical 77-year-old's, contained an unusually high amount of grey matter for that age, and the corpus callosum was about twice as thick as average. The plausible cause is the violin.

Common trap: The syllabus lists a separate item on music as a hobby, delivered as a guitar performance rather than a lecture. Its examinable content is this habit: protect your hobbies from your profession, and prefer an active musical hobby, because there will be a day when you have no job, no family and no health, and the hobby is what survives.

Habit 3: Think with your hands

Brain and hand co-evolved. Humans did not always have a thumb. Over evolutionary time the fifth finger slipped into a socket and became an opposable thumb, which made it possible to hold things, make tools, climb and throw. Humans are the only species that can kill from a distance, and that is the thumb's doing.

How to run it:

  • Sketch your ideas. Do not speak them, do not write them, draw them. Give an idea a physical shape (a sketch, a Lego block) and it gains clarity and becomes something others can build on. This rule reappears in Module 4 on brainstorming.
  • Always carry a pen, pencil and notepad. Write the problem down and break it down. Problems start solving themselves.
  • Play with your hands: clay, colours, sand, Lego, Play-Doh. This builds dexterity and, more importantly, reduces the gap between imagination and execution.

The Indian knowledge-versus-skills split. Knowledge is how things work; skill is actually making them work. An electrical engineer calls an electrician; a mechanical engineer calls a mechanic. India has put knowledge on a high pedestal and skills on a low one. In the West, where labour is expensive, people repair their own scooters, mow their own lawns and do their own plumbing, and in doing so acquire both know-how and know-why, which is where real creativity sits. COVID forced many Indians to use their hands for the first time.

Memory hook: "Indians don't think with hands, Indians think with mouth." When we have a problem we talk about it, and there are three opinions between two people.

Habit 4: Experimental mindset

Recall the school lab. You had more fun in the physics and chemistry lab than in the theory class, you failed constantly, and you never concluded you should stop going. In an experimental mindset failure is not permanent, and every failure carries fresh learning.

Thomas Edison, the wizard of Menlo Park, was declared unfit for school and educated by his mother, and went on to file over a thousand patents. He failed roughly 10,000 times perfecting the electric bulb, and his rebuttal was that he now knew 9,999 ways in which it does not work, which is itself a great source of knowledge. He was constantly working with his hands: new filaments, materials, gases, voltages, currents and sizes.

Edward de Bono: "If you don't want to change your mind, why have one?" Your liver, pancreas, intestine, heart and lungs are not changing. Your mind is the only thing that changes.

How to run it: try new cuisines, places, clothes, books, programmes and films. There is nothing default in life except death.

Habit 5: Take half chances

Two kinds of people: those who wait for an opportunity to arrive fully dressed and glamorous, with an invitation, and those who slip through the door while it is a crack open.

The Tanishq crucible story. Tanishq's Hosur factory in Tamil Nadu imports more gold than anyone in India except the Reserve Bank. Gold is melted in silicon carbide crucibles, and once spent, the pores of the crucible are sealed with trapped gold. Nobody knew how to extract it, so spent crucibles were left in the yard.

A factory supervisor, Rajashekar, had an idea and told nobody, least of all his boss. He paid his neighbour 250 rupees to rent a road roller for a day, rode it into the factory, laid a crucible on a mat and crushed it. Tanishq recovered 4 kilograms of gold, worth crores, and the method became a standard operating procedure.

Memory hook: Had he emailed his boss first, the idea would have been dismissed as nonsensical and he would have been warned off. The downside he actually risked was 250 rupees, some embarrassment, and one crucible that was already scrap.

MS Dhoni's career as a series of half chances.

  • The 2007 inaugural T20 World Cup. A rookie squad went to South Africa without Sachin Tendulkar, and many believe Dhoni was handed the captaincy so that he would fail and could then be removed. He came back with the World Cup, and repeated it in 2011.
  • Wicketkeeping. He was a footballer. The habit of collecting the ball with gloves transferred to collecting it behind the stumps, and that got him into the squad.
  • The helicopter shot. The Ranchi ground he played on was rocky, so rather than clear it his coach laid a mat over it. A leather ball on a mat over rocks misbehaves: one delivery at knee height, the next above your ears. Learning to handle that produced the helicopter shot and the pull shot. Adversity taught him to read the ball, the bowler and his team.

The three sub-habits that let you spot a half chance:

Habit 6: Discipline

Discipline is not punctuality. Punctuality is a part of discipline, not the heart of it. The heart of discipline is taking the high road whenever life offers an easy choice and a hard one.

Examples of a lack of discipline from the lecture: hitting snooze on a 5 a.m. alarm; not finishing the module you promised yourself; picking up the phone for reels at 4 a.m. at the airport when you have a book in the other hand; saying sorry to your daughter instead of to your boss; taking the free sweet you know you should not eat.

Christopher Nolan is the reference case. His rule is to take a script and stick to it come what may. In Tenet he crashed a real Boeing 707 rather than use visual effects. In Oppenheimer he staged a real explosion. Sachin Tendulkar practised in the nets a solid hour before anyone else in the 2011 India-New Zealand series at Chinnaswamy, then got out for a duck, and came and practised again for the next match.

Memory hook: "Hard work is what happens after the idea, not before the idea." Ideas are a dime a dozen and AI can produce them by the bucket. If you have to break the pattern, you have to have a pattern of breaking the pattern, and that pattern is discipline.

Habit 7: Sense of humour

Life is a tragedy and the only way through it is to take it easy. Do not take yourself seriously, and learn to forgive yourself before you forgive others. Most people find it easy to forgive others and impossible to forgive themselves.

Sincerity is an attitude towards doing something. Seriousness is a state of mind. The only place for a serious person is an ICU.

Memory hook: "Don't confuse sincerity with seriousness. Be sincere, not serious."


2.7 On curiosity

Curiosity is the seed of creativity

Children ask questions because everything is new and because they have no inhibitions. Then parents say sit down, keep quiet, stop asking. Then a teacher supplies a prescription: this is the question, this is the answer, write it and you pass. The child hops onto the treadmill and becomes an adult living in a templatised format.

Dick Fosbury and the Fosbury Flop at the Mexico Olympics replaced the barrel roll and revolutionised the high jump for every generation since. Watch it once and it becomes the obvious way to do it.

Memory hook: Any act of creativity looks impossible in foresight and obvious in hindsight. UPI and FASTag both looked unthinkable and now look inevitable.

Curiosity beats passion

Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love: it is far easier to follow your curiosity than to follow your passion. Most people are not clear what their passion is, so telling them to follow it is useless advice. Curiosity is a route you can actually walk.

Three propositions about passion:

  1. Your passion need not be constant. Soni's own moved from reading to public speaking to creativity workshops to travel to writing books. One year of a passion is fine.
  2. Your passion requires no public acknowledgement. It need not be glamorous and nobody has to approve of it.
  3. Passion is what you do without getting tired. Soni has taught from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and still been standing at the end, which is how he identified teaching as his.

Soni's own curiosity trail, told deliberately including the failures: while employed at Wipro he wrote GMAT and TOEFL and applied to 25 PhD programmes, spending 4 lakh rupees on application fees alone. He was rejected by 24. The one acceptance was IIM Bangalore. Rejections come with no explanation, only "not suitable". Later, graduating at 36, he reasoned he could start a company at 36 but not at 56, whereas he could still teach at 56, and so started Inflection Point.

Creativity does not come from working hard. It comes from thinking hard. Pushing more effort in the same unproductive direction gets you nowhere; you need to tinker.

Angela Duckworth's Grit, built from studies of US Navy SEALs, spelling-bee finalists and athletes, gives two equations:

Where: Talent is innate ability and Effort is the work put in, so innate talent produces nothing until effort converts it into a skill.

Put them together and effort appears twice, so effort counts twice over. That squared effect is grit: persisting in the face of external and internal opposition.

Grit x Tinkering

Soni's amendment: grit alone is not enough. What creativity needs is Grit x Tinkering. Hard work with experimentation is what people usually call smart work. Sheer hard work without experimentation goes nowhere, and this matters more than ever because a machine can repeat the same operation indefinitely without tiring. Ask it to do something slightly different and it fails badly.

Memory hook: "Technology is a great slave but a tyrant master." Give machines the repetitive, laborious, high-consistency work. Keep the change for yourself.

Dhoni's bowl-out, 2007 T20 World Cup. A bowl-out broke ties in that format: each team bowls at an unguarded stump, and whoever hits it most wins. India did not use its frontline attack. Dhoni used part-time bowlers including Sehwag and Robin Uthappa.

How he knew: before and after every match he had all eleven players, batsmen included, bowl at the stumps, and observed who was accurate. He then stood right at the stumps during the bowl-out, because a person standing at the target is a signalling mechanism that aligns the bowler. Result: three out of three for India, zero for Pakistan, whose frontline seamers habitually aim for an edge rather than the stumps and whose keeper stands yards back. This is not hard work. This is tinkering on top of grit.

2. Where you learn from is not where you earn from

Einstein in 1905. He was not a professor. He was a third-division clerk at the patent office in Bern, six days a week, nine hours a day, on a small salary, because every university in Europe had rejected his application, he could find no tuition students, and the one pupil he did get stopped coming. He was 26 and fighting a divorce.

In that miracle year of 1905 he published five research papers, including the special theory of relativity, Brownian motion and the duality of light. He had no lab, no research associate, no grant and no students. He had a train station, a clock tower and himself, and he ran thought experiments: if a train moves at a certain speed and a passenger tosses a ball inside it, does the trajectory look the same to someone inside and someone outside? The Nobel Prize came sixteen years later.

3. Learn to forgive yourself

Sorry should come more easily to you than please. Indian upbringing teaches conservatism and risk aversion ("why cry over spilt milk", "live within your means"). Now is precisely when you are shielded enough to take risk, and the risk being asked of you is a half chance, not betting the shirt off your back.

Paul Kalanithi, When Breath Becomes Air: a top oncologist who was diagnosed with cancer at 36 and given six months. His question was "why me?", and the only available answer is "why not me?" Whether you try or do not try, you will die. If you try, you at least leave a trace for someone else.


2.8 How to develop imagination

Einstein: imagination is more important than knowledge, because knowledge tells you what has transpired while imagination tells you what could happen.

Why patterns are both useful and dangerous

Patterns reduce cognitive load. Imagine having to decide each morning which side of the bed to get out of, which slipper goes on first, how many brush strokes, where to apply the soap. Patterns relieve you of the mundane so you can reach the profound.

But a patterned way of living absolves you from being creative, and creativity is precisely a systematic way of breaking patterns. Children imagine a toothbrush into an aeroplane, a pen into a boat, a stick into a sword. We laugh at it, and we watch Harry Potter, the Avengers, Pixar and Marvel for exactly the same escape from the predictable.

2.9 Creativity and meditation

What meditation actually is

At any moment your mind is in one of three places: the future (planning, scheming, worrying about a career), the past (regretting, repenting, remembering), or where your body is. The third is rare. The mind is like a monkey and will not stay still. In children the clinical version of this is ADHD; in adults it shows up as reaching for your phone the moment you join a queue, because your mind has spare processing capacity and pent-up attention that has to go somewhere.

Every meditation and mindfulness practice has one premise: centre your mind where your body is.

This is spirituality, not religion. Every tradition, read beyond the surface, is talking about the same thing: getting to the essence of who you are.

Three practices

Practice 1: Non-attachment

Your emotions about anything should be provisional. You cannot have permanent emotions about temporary phenomena, and everything is temporary. Roughly 110 billion people have lived on the surface of the earth against a current population of around 7 billion. We are neither the last nor the best.

Attachment applies to problems and ideas too. Get attached to a problem and you are miserable if you cannot solve it; get attached to a solution and you are miserable if it fails.

How to run it: create a space between yourself and the problem, so you can look at it objectively even when it is your own. Be the observer, not the actor. Most of the trouble you experience is self-created rather than external: it is not the physical pain, it is the thought about the pain.

Memory hook: "You can cross the bridge only when the bridge comes." There is no point thinking about the bridge now.

Practice 2: Non-resistance

Non-resistance is having no friction between you and reality. Accept what has happened first. Acceptance is not surrender and does not mean you will not change it; acceptance is the first step and is what gives you the power to change things.

Soni's own example. Driving to campus he lost attention for a moment and hit an auto-rickshaw from behind at a signal. Rather than escaping, he pulled over, rolled the window down, smiled and apologised without argument. The driver said, "It's okay, sir. It happens." Had he instead run the mental gymnastics (how could I be so careless, actually it was his fault, I should have honked) he could not have thought clearly about the next step.

Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning. A medical practitioner who survived more than three years in Nazi concentration camps. His entire family was killed, his manuscript burned, and he watched cellmates turn cannibal. His insight: you cannot control what happens to you, only what you do, and you can control what you do only if you maintain a distance between what is happening and you.

Non-resistance is not pale surrender. It is surrendering to the truth: yes, I met an accident; yes, I failed; yes, I am fired. The moment you accept it, you can think about what comes next.

Practice 3: Non-judgement

Why judgement is built in. An ancestor sees a shrub rustling and can believe it is wind or a snake. Believe wind, become casual, and if it is a snake you are dead. Believe snake, stay alert, and if it is wind you are still safe. Being judgemental was the secret of our survival. Today you do not meet vipers on the street, and yet judgement runs at the same intensity about people, situations, characters, problems and places.

How to run it: isolate the problem from its context and look at it objectively, without judgement about it. Paul Kalanithi's "why me / why not me" is the same move applied to yourself.

The prescription

Sit quietly for ten minutes a day. Not eyes closed, not japa, not shlokas, not breath-focus. Just sit quietly without doing anything and without sleeping. It is much harder than it sounds. Ten becomes fifteen, fifteen becomes twenty. Soni treats his own ten minutes as a high leverage activity and reports being calmer, less agitated, better at retaining knowledge and far more productive.

Do not park spirituality until retirement. What if you never turn 60? What if at 60 you lack the physical wherewithal? What if at 60 you realise you could have started at 20?

Focus, one more time

Zen comes from the Sanskrit Dhyan, carried out of India through Gautama Buddha, and practised religiously in Japan while Indians largely stopped. The Japanese are among the world's best problem solvers and they do not solve ten problems a day, they solve one or two, with legendary attention spans supported by simpler lives, healthier food and longer lives.

Memory hook: The single word that separates highly creative people from everyone else is not talent. It is focus. They solve one problem a day, and they solve it so well that the problem stands no chance.

There are two kinds of progress: external and internal. External progress alone will never satisfy you if you are internally hollow, and internal progress is something to start right away.
