Emile Durkheim: Social Order and Solidarity

Durkheim's central inquiry focused on: How does society hold together despite increasing complexity and specialization?

Types of Solidarity

Durkheim distinguishes between two forms of social cohesion corresponding to stages of development.

FeatureMechanical Solidarity (Pre-Modern)Organic Solidarity (Modern)
BasisLikeness/Similarity. People are the same (work, religion).Difference/Interdependence. Specialization makes us rely on others.
AnalogyRock: Identical molecules; parts are interchangeable.Living Organism: Unique, specialized organs vital to the whole.
StructureSegmentary: Identical, isolated clans/tribes.Integrated: High contact between specialized groups.
ConsciousnessCollective dominates (the "we").Individual consciousness expands (the "I").
  • Transitions (Dynamic Density): Transition to Organic solidarity is inevitable due to population/specialization but not smooth. It can lead to Anomie (pathology) during the gap between old norms dying and new ones forming.

Collective Consciousness and Law

Durkheim uses Law as the visible symbol of solidarity.

Type of LawNature of OffensePurpose of PunishmentDominant In
RepressiveViolation of Common Beliefs.Punishment/Suffering: Express outrage; heal the wound.Mechanical
RestitutiveViolation of Individual Rights.Restoration: Return to status quo; organize cooperation.Organic
  • Dynamic Density: Increase in population and interaction that forces the transition to Organic Solidarity through the Division of Labor.
  • Collective Effervescence: Shared emotional energy generated during group rituals (e.g., festivals, matches) that reaffirms social bonds.

Case Study: The Witches of Salem (Kai Erikson)

Applying functionalism to the 1692 Puritan witch trials.

  • Boundary Maintenance: When original religious zeal faded and identity diluted (Half-Way Covenant), the community unconsciously "invented" an internal enemy (the Witch).
  • Function: Identifying and punishing witches redefined moral boundaries and restored group cohesion through shared outrage.
  • Shift in Justice: Initially accepted "spectral evidence" (dreams). When accusations hit the powerful (judges/governor's wife), rules changed to require "objective evidence," ending the trials. Power shapes deviance.

Cyberspace Community (Anne Hornsby)

Hornsby applies Durkheim's prerequisites for group survival: Regulation and Integration.

DimensionLow Levels Lead To...High Levels Lead To...
RegulationAnomie: Normlessness/Chaos.Fatalism: Over-regulation; no agency.
IntegrationEgoism: Isolation/Individualism.Altruism: Over-identification (Self-sacrifice).

Online Mechanics: Replicating Structure

  1. Establishing Regulation: Explicit FAQs, Netiquette, and Moderators (Bouncers) to ban violators.
  2. Establishing Integration: Emoticons, Gift economies (reciprocal help), and Offline meetups to create genuine Collective Effervescence.

  • Social Fact: External forces (laws, morals) that exert pressure on individuals.
  • Anomie: A state of normlessness or breakdown of moral guidance.
  • Collective Effervescence: Intense group energy that reaffirms social bonds.
